Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases, due to either pancreas not producing enough insulin or the cells of the body not responding properly to the produced insulin which causes high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. More than 400 millions people are affected all over the world with diabetes.
There are three main types of DM:
Polyurea (frequent urination), polydipsia (increased thirst), polyphagia (increased hunger), weight loss, fatigue, itchy skin, blurred eye vision, non healing wounds or cuts etc. If diabetes is remains untreated or blood sugar levels increased since prolonged period it tends to cause sever complications that are more fatal than actual disease and most typically develop after 10 years of DM, that is why it suppose to be a ‘silent killer’. So it’s most important to have looked on your raised blood sugar levels regularly, if it’s remains untreated then it is the only cause of several complications.
Cardiovascular disease – about 75 % of deaths in diabetics are due to coronary artery disease, because it doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Chronic kidney disease – due to damage to the kidneys, almost half of the patients of DM are suffering from different kidney disorders like diabetes nephropathy, CRF ,ARF etc.
Diabetic neuropathy – due to damage to the nerves is the most common complication of it.
Diabetic retinopathy – due to damage to the retina of eyes, start with blurred vision ends to permanent loss of vision.
Diabetic foot – due to ulcers formation at foot, can be difficult to treat, sometimes requiring amputation of limb also.
As per ayurveda there are 20 types of diabetes know as “prameha”, if not treated eventually develop into “Madhumeha” (diabetes mellitus). Out of 4 are due to vata, 6 are due to pitta, and 10 are result from kapha doshas which has been precisely described in ayurveda as major disease (Maharog). In this type of disease impaired digestion leads to accumulation of impurities (aama), which accumulate in the pancreatic cells and impair the production of insulin, after that maximum deterioration of dhatus (body tissues) occurs, which tends to affects all vital organs later on.
