‘Ayurveda’ means the ‘knowledge’ or ‘science of the life’. The oldest system of medicines which uses the inherent principles of nature to help maintaining health by keeping individual’s body, mind and spirit in a perfect equilibrium with nature. This comprehensive health care system literally teaches us a ‘way’ or ‘art of living’. Where each and every aspects of healthy living are considered in the treatment part like healthy diet, healthy life style, balanced state of mind , and other basic ayurvedic components.
According to basic principle of Ayurveda the physiological constitution of an individual is mainly based on characteristics principle of ‘Tridoshas’ ( 3 -humours or biochemical levels ) , Saptadhatus ( 7-bodily tissues) , ‘ Trimalas’ ( Waste products / Faces, Urine,Sweat ) and ‘Jatharagni’ (Digestive fire) . As per ancient writers; The individual is said to be healthy only when the equilibrium in state of these elements (3-doshas & 7-dhatus) , adequate digestion (Agni) , proper excretion of wastes (Mala kriya), happiness of soul (Atma), satisfied senses (Indriyan), and a blissful state of mind (Mana) are working properly in those. Let’s have a glance on how these vital elements works.
“Doshas” :- The three body humours or energies of an individual categorised into ‘vata, pitta , and kapha’ doshas . This can also correlate with biochemical levels in the body. ‘Vata’ governs all body movements like controlling blood flow ,elimination of wastes, breathing, neuro transmissions , loco motor activities ,even thoughts across the mind etc. ‘Pitta’ is the principle of bio-transformations so pertains all the metabolic activities and digestion inside the body. ‘Kapha’ maintains all structure and lubrications in the body . It functions through the body fluids, and it is the principle of binding .
“Dhatus” :- Sapta dhatus according to ayurveda Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda, Asthi, Majja, and Shukra are formed consecutively on by one through the food we consumed and get digested properly. These can be correlate with seven bodily tissues. Like, the nutrious portion of our food (Ahar ras) nourishes lymph tissues or blood plasma through lymphatic drainage system (Rasavaha srotas). Similarly other bodily tissues or dhatus get nourished and formed one after another. Each previous dhatu participate in nourishment of next one in a very systematic manner then helps in functioning of the body.
“Ojas”:- An ultimate essence of the sapta dhatu also known as ‘maha dhatu’ or ‘sarvadhatu sara’ means the supreme refinery product of all the preceding seven dhatus. It is present over all in the body like presence of butter / ghee in the milk, honey in the flowers etc. The strength of physical, mental, and even spiritual condition of the body is completely depends on quality and quantity of the ‘ojas’ in the body. It represent in the form of ‘immunity’ inside the body.
“Agni”:- This term is used in the sense of digestion or metabolic transformation of food and metabolic products. As per ayurvedic physiology there are 13 types of agnis acts on entire metabolism process. ‘Five Bhutagni’ - (Prithvi, Jal, Vayu, Tej, and Akash) are works at the level of intermediary metabolism. ‘Seven Dhatwagni’- (respectively Rasagni to Shukragni) Each dhatu consecutively receive its nourishment from the previous dhatu . This systemic metabolism being processed with the help of these seven dhatu agnis, same like irrigation.
‘Jatharagni’ - It is also known as ‘kayagni’ means digestive fire . It is the main element active in stomach and gastrointestinal tract which directly digest the consumed food and separates it in the nutrient portion from the waste products. After nourishing sapta dhatus the residue vital fraction gets converted into ‘ ojas’(immunity) such process is well explained as ‘sar-kitta vibhajan’ in ayurveda. ‘Agni’ is important phenomenon helpful in growth of human body and maintaining all physiological actions .Normal functional state of agni or balanced state (Samagni) contributes in desire health while abnormal state of it contributes to any pathological changes, so it should not be very low ( Mandagni) , very hyper or excess (Tikshnagni) , and disturbed (Vishamagni) finally absence of agni results in death.
The moral behind explaining this basic fundamental principle of ayurveda, to alert you about how today’s busy life style, bad dietary habits, stressful living, and misbehaviour in any sense can affect your health directly or indirectly. Ayurveda impact fully speaks about healthy diet and life style (Ahar-Vihar) and always advised to follow it properly since ancient era, which if not followed sincerely tends to cause several diseases. Ayurveda believes that there are always some causative factors behind any pathology “Where there’s smoke there’s fire” The reason is why ayurveda never consider any unknown etiology or idiopathic causes behind the manifestation of any disease, where other so-called advanced sciences do. Just by applying ayurvedic protocols and knowing their importance to us, we can avoid rising threats to our health. Once thoughts of ayurveda accepted thoroughly, we assure you no more diseases like cancer, diabetes, thyroid, infertility, different syndromes and autoimmune diseases of unknown etiology take a toll on your health.
